The vehicle controls are simple and easy to use.
Lever 1 gear shift. The neutral position of the lever is determined by its free movement to the left and right, while the lever tends to take the extreme right position under the action of the release spring.
Lever 2 of the handbrake is used to brake the car in a parking lot or on a hill. In case of emergency, the hand brake can be used as an emergency while the car is moving. To release the lever, press the button located on the end of the handle. It is easier to press the button if the lever is slightly raised before releasing the brake. When the lever is returned to its lowest position, the control red lamp goes out.
Lever 3 controls the heater valve to regulate the flow of hot fluid from the engine to the heater radiator.
Lever 4 controls the cover of the air intake hatch of the body. When the lever is moved to the leftmost position, the hatch closes; when the lever is moved to the right, the sunroof opens and outside air flows into the vehicle interior for ventilation or for heating in winter.
Pedal 5 throttle control. After starting a cold engine, it is not recommended to press the pedal until the engine has warmed up and started to work steadily, without interruptions. And vice versa, if you need to start a very hot engine, then you need to press the pedal all the way, and after starting, as soon as the engine starts to work without interruption, gradually release it.
When starting a hot engine, do not press the pedal again, so as not to cause a re-enrichment of the combustible mixture, which makes it difficult to start the engine.
The brake pedal 7 serves to brake the car, which should be smooth and continuous. You should get used to considering the brakes as an emergency system, which will increase the stability of the car, reduce tire wear and fuel consumption, and create a comfortable ride for passengers. Sharp intensive braking by a brake pedal to apply only in exceptional cases.
The carburetor choke control handle 9 is fixed in any intermediate position when the engine warms up. The full cover of the carburetor air damper is used when starting a cold engine to enrich the combustible mixture. After warming up, do not forget to open the damper by pushing the handle.
Button 12 (pedal of the car VAZ-2103) windshield washer pump.
To wash the windshield, press the button several times and turn on the wiper switch. For a VAZ-2103 car, pressing the washer pump pedal turns on (at the end of the pedal stroke) as well as a windshield wiper.
Switch 13 outdoor lighting. When the key is pressed on the lower shoulder and the ignition key is turned to position I or III, the side lights, high or low beam headlights are turned on (depending on the position of the lever), lamps for lighting the cigarette lighter socket and trunk, a license plate lamp, as well as a lamp for lighting the engine compartment when the hood is open.
The instrument lighting switch 14 is energized when the switch 13 is on and the ignition key is turned to position I or III. Lighting turns on when you press the lower shoulder of the key.
The three-position wiper switch 15 is energized when the ignition key is turned to position I or III, and the switch can be in three positions:
- 1) the lower arm of the key is pressed to failure - the wiper operates continuously;
- 2) intermediate position of the key - the wiper works intermittently;
- 3) the upper shoulder of the key is pressed to failure - the wiper does not work.
The return of the brushes to their original horizontal position is automatic.
The headlight switch lever 16 can be installed in three positions:
- extreme upper - only side lights are on, headlights are off;
- extreme lower - high beam headlights are on;
- intermediate position - dipped headlights on.
At the same time, headlights and lanterns are on if switch 13 is turned on.
The headlights are also turned on by moving the lever towards you. Turning on switch 13 is optional (flashing light in the daytime). The headlights remain on as long as the lever is pressed.
Lever 17 of the turn signal switch. To turn on the flashing lamps in the sidelights and taillights, signaling a turn, the lever is turned by finger force up and down. When turning up, the turn indicators to the right light up, when the lever is turned down, the turn indicators to the left.
Ignition switch 18. The switch key can occupy four positions:
- 0 - the key is in a horizontal position - everything is off (garage parking, anti-theft device not activated, key can be removed).
- I - the key is turned clockwise until it clicks - the ignition is on.
- II - the key is turned clockwise to the end, overcoming the force of the spring, the ignition and starter are turned on. In this position, the key is not fixed, and for the starter to work, the key must be held by hand. When the hand force is removed, the key returns to position I.
- III - the key is turned counterclockwise from position 0 - the anti-theft device and the parking light are on, additionally switched on by the headlight switch lever and the exterior light switch (key can be removed). To turn the anti-theft device on and off, it is necessary to slightly shake the steering wheel in both directions while turning the key.
The key should never be left in position I when the engine is not running. Also, do not turn the key to position 0 while driving, turning off the ignition to save fuel. This can lead to an accident if, when the ignition is switched on, the key is accidentally turned further to position III and the anti-theft device is activated.
The steering wheel 19 has a hub lowered below the rim and two offset from the center, lying on the same straight spokes, which do not interfere with monitoring the readings of control devices. All control devices are completed in a combination of devices.
The main elements of the instrument cluster are as follows.
Pointer 23 coolant temperature in the engine cooling system. The light area of the scale refers to the normal operating temperature of the engine; the transition of the arrow to the red field of the scale indicates excessive heating of the engine.
Pointer 24 of oil pressure in the lubrication system of the VAZ-2103 engine, The operating oil pressure should be in the range of 3.5-4.5 kg / cm2.
Pilot lamp 25 (red) insufficient oil pressure in the engine lubrication system. The lamp lights up when the ignition key is turned from position 0 to position I, and goes out after the engine is started, when the oil pressure becomes sufficient to provide lubrication (0.4–0.8 kg/cm2 - calibration limits of the lamp sensor of the VAZ-2101 and VAZ-2103 engines), and should not light up under normal engine operating conditions. If the engine is overheated or running at very low speeds, the lamp may light up even with a good lubrication system. In all other cases, the lighting of the lamp indicates a lack of oil in the crankcase or a malfunction in the lubrication system, which must be quickly identified and eliminated, since the engine can be disabled if the oil pressure is insufficient.
Operation of the engine with a lubrication system that does not provide sufficient oil pressure is unacceptable.
Tachometer 26 with electronic drive from the ignition distributor. The yellow color indicates the engine operating modes at high speeds, the red color indicates the modes that are dangerous for the engine.
Speedometer 27 with a summing counter of the distance traveled by the car in kilometers; for a VAZ-2103 car, in addition, with a daily counter of the distance traveled in kilometers. Red risks on the VAZ-2101 speedometer scale near the numbers 40, 60 and 100 show that these vehicle speeds are not recommended to be exceeded when driving in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears, respectively.
Pilot lamp 30 (blue) The high beam indicator lights up at the same time as the high beam headlights are switched on.
Pilot lamp 31 (green) direction indicators lights up with a flashing light if the switch lever is turned to the position of the right or left turn.
Pilot lamp 32 (green) turn on side lights lights up when the outside lighting is turned on.
Handle 33 is used to set the daily distance counter to zero. The counter is set to zero by turning the knob counterclockwise. It is strictly forbidden to perform this operation while the vehicle is moving.
Pilot lamp 34 (red) The battery charge indicator lights up when the ignition key is turned from position 0 to position I and goes out after the engine is started. If the lamp is lit while the engine is running, this indicates a malfunction in the charging system that must be repaired.
Pilot lamp 35 (orange) turning on the carburetor choke control handle (to start a cold engine) lights up when the handle 9 is pulled out. The carburetor starter is turned on only to warm up the engine. Don't forget to turn it off as the mixture becomes overly rich.
Pilot lamp 36 (red) applying the handbrake and (for VAZ-2103) indications of insufficient fluid level in the reservoirs of the hydraulic brake system.
Lights up with a flashing light when the hand brake lever is moved up. The constant light of this lamp on a VAZ-2103 vehicle indicates that the fluid level in one of the two tanks of the hydraulic drive system has dropped below the permissible limit due to fluid consumption or due to damage to the brake system.
The three-position switch 39 of the heater motor is energized when the ignition key is turned to position I or III.
The switch has three fixed positions:
- 1) the upper shoulder of the key is pressed to failure - the electric motor is turned on at low speed;
- 2) the lower shoulder of the key is pressed to failure - the electric motor is turned on at high speed;
- 3) in the middle position of the key, the electric motor is switched off.
Electric clock 43 with a handle for transferring arrows. The clock works regardless of the position of the ignition key.
