To check, set the front wheels to straight ahead. Then, turning the steering wheel in both directions, check if the distance between the end of the crankcase 7 (see fig. 184) and risk B applied on the shaft of the worm of the steering gear. A change in distance is a sign of clearance in the worm bearings.
To adjust the clearance in the worm bearings, turning the steering wheel 1-1.5 turns to the left, unscrew the bolts securing the bottom cover 19 and drain the oil from the steering gear housing. After removing the cover, remove the shim 18 or replace it with a thinner one. After that, having fixed the bottom cover, check again if there is any axial movement of the worm in the bearings. If there is no movement, fill the crankcase with oil and check the steering wheel turning force (setting the front wheels on a smooth slab), which should not exceed 20 kgf.
