1. Before assembly, lubricate the screw splines of the armature shaft and freewheel hubs, gear and cover bushings with engine oil. Lubricate the driving ring of the drive with Litol-24 grease.
2. Before assembling, check the axial free play of the armature shaft by first assembling the covers, body and armature together and tightening the tie rod nuts. In this case, the anchor can be without a drive, and the front cover without a lever.
3. For starter 35.3708, the axial free play of the armature shaft must be no more than 0.5 mm. It is adjusted by selecting the thickness of the shim 10 (see fig. Starter parts 35.3708), located between the lock washer of the armature shaft and the cover on the collector side.
4. The axial free play of the armature shaft of the ST-221 starter should be within 0.07–0.7 mm. Changing the amount of free play is achieved by selecting the number or thickness of the shims located at the front end of the armature shaft.
5. Having picked up the shims, proceed with the assembly, which is performed in the reverse order of disassembly.
6. Slide an insulating plastic tube over the tie bolt under the serial stator coil bus. At the ST-221 starter, insulating plastic tubes are put on the tie rods.
7. After assembly, check the starter on the stand.
