To perform the work, you will need an assistant, as well as a special key by 10 mm for brake pipes, a clear vinyl pipe of suitable diameter and fresh brake fluid.
Removing
1. We prepare the car for work (see "Vehicle preparation for maintenance and repair").
2. Disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal (see "Battery - removal and installation").
3. Remove the vacuum brake booster (see "Vacuum brake booster - replacement").
4. Turn the steering wheel to the position where the turnbuckle bolt (located at the lower end of the steering shaft) will take a position convenient for unscrewing the bolt.
5. socket wrench by 13 mm with an extension, unscrew the bolt of the turnbuckle.
6. Suitable tool (for example, a chisel) unclench the clutch to facilitate removal of the steering shaft.
7. Remove the steering column switch (see "Paddle switches - removal and installation").
8. Disconnect the wire ends from the ignition switch terminals (see "Switch (lock) ignition - removal, check and replacement of the contact group").
9. socket wrench by 10 mm or sliding pliers (in case of shearing of detachable heads) unscrew the two bolts securing the shaft bracket.
10. socket wrench by 13 mm unscrew the two nuts securing the steering shaft bracket.
11. socket wrench by 13 mm loosen the two nuts securing the steering shaft misalignment compensator and the gearbox shaft.
12. Remove the bracket from the steering shaft.
13. Having unbent the edges of the carpet and noise insulation, use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the three screws securing the steering shaft seal and shift the seal up.
14. Remove the steering shaft from the gearbox shaft.
15. Remove the ignition switch (see "Switch (lock) ignition - removal, check and replacement of the contact group").
16. socket wrench by 10 mm We loosen the coupling bolt of the clamp for fastening the pipe of the upper shaft support.
17. Remove the pipe from the bracket.
Installation
1. Installation of a steering shaft is carried out upside-down. At the same time, we orient the depression made on the splines of the steering shaft turnbuckle towards the protrusion of the steering gear shaft.
2. Connect the steering shaft to the gearbox shaft (if necessary, tapping on the end of the steering shaft with a hammer).
3. Install the steering shaft bracket without tightening the compensator nuts.
4. We install the steering column switch and the steering wheel on the splines of the shaft, fix it with a nut and turn it left and right several times to self-install the shaft.
5. Finally tighten the compensator fastening nuts.
6. We pump the hydraulic brakes (see "Hydraulic brakes - pumping and replacing brake fluid").
