Noise and knocks in the suspension when the car is moving
Causes of the malfunction and how to fix it:
- suspension struts are faulty. When rocking the car, check visually and aurally - for knocks and extraneous noise in the racks, for fluid leaks and for deformed housing, support cups, brackets and pivot arms of the racks. If these faults are found, replace the suspension strut or repair it (at the service station). Minor oil stains on the strut body are not a sign of a malfunction and do not serve as a reason for replacing or repairing the suspension strut;
- loosened the bolts of the brackets of the stretch marks or the bolts securing the anti-roll bar to the body. The rubber pads of the stretch marks, rods or rubber-metal hinges are worn out. Check the fastening of parts and suspension assemblies by inspection. If rubber-metal products are worn out, replace them;
- the upper suspension strut mount to the body has loosened. After removing the protective caps from the upper supports of the racks, inspect the fastening of the racks and, if necessary, tighten the nuts to a torque of 2... 2.5 kgf·m;
- sediment, breaks, delamination of rubber from the rack support housing. Check clearance A (see fig. 69), as stated in the section: «Maintenance», and inspection - the condition of the rubber part of the support. If necessary, replace the support;
- wear of the ball joint of the suspension arm. Check the condition of the ball joint, as indicated in the section «Front suspension and wheel maintenance», and if necessary, replace the hinge;
- sediment or breakage of the suspension spring. Visually check the condition of the spring and replace it;
- destruction of the compression stroke buffer. Visually check the condition of the buffer and replace it;
- big wheel imbalance. It causes the wheel to beat, which is clearly visible when the hung wheel rotates. Wheel imbalance is caused by uneven circumferential wear of the tire tread, misalignment of balance weights or tires during fitting, rim deformation, or tire damage. This cause of the malfunction is eliminated by replacing worn or damaged tires and rims or by balancing the wheels.
Fluid leaking from rack (rear shock absorber)
Causes of the malfunction and how to fix it:
- wear or destruction of the seal. Replace seal;
- nicks, scuffs on the stem, damage to the chrome plating. Replace worn or damaged stem and gland;
- shrinkage or damage to the rack housing O-ring (shock absorber reservoir). Replace ring.
Insufficient suspension strut resistance (rear shock absorber) during recoil
Causes of the malfunction and how to fix it:
- Leakage of the return valve or bypass valve. Damaged valve parts must be replaced or their damage repaired. If the fluid is contaminated, filter or replace it;
- insufficient amount of fluid due to leakage. Replace damaged parts and fill in liquid;
- scoring on the piston, cylinder or piston ring. Replace damaged parts and fluid;
- wear or damage to the fluoroplastic layer of the rod guide bushing. Replace guide bush;
- recoil valve spring settling. Replace spring; the presence of impurities in the liquid. Filter or replace fluid.
Insufficient suspension strut resistance (rear shock absorber) during compression
Causes of the malfunction and how to fix it:
- compression valve leak. Replace damaged parts or repair their malfunctions. If the liquid is contaminated, filter it or replace it;
- insufficient fluid due to leakage. Replace damaged parts and fill in liquid;
- the presence of impurities in the liquid. Filter or replace fluid;
- wear, deformation or destruction of the compression valve discs. Replace worn or damaged discs.
Frequent «breakdowns» pendants
Causes of the malfunction and how to fix it:
- suspension spring settling. Replace spring;
- rack not working (shock absorber). Replace or repair rack (shock absorber).
Driving the vehicle away from straight ahead
Causes of the malfunction and how to fix it:
- different tire pressures. Check the tire pressure and bring it to normal;
- violation of wheel alignment. Adjust wheel alignment;
- destruction of one of the upper supports of the suspension struts. Replace support;
- uneven elasticity of suspension springs. Replace the spring that has lost its elasticity;
- significant difference in tire wear. Replace worn tires;
- increased imbalance of the front wheels. Balance wheels.
Increased and uneven tire wear
Causes of the malfunction and how to fix it:
- too sharp acceleration with wheel slip. Do not allow sudden acceleration;
- frequent use of brakes with wheel slippage. Eliminate sudden braking;
- wheel alignment misaligned. Adjust the angles of the front wheels;
- increased cornering speed. Reduce speed; large wear of ball joints of suspension arms and rubber-metal joints. Determine the condition of the suspension parts, as indicated in the section «Front Suspension Maintenance», and replace worn or damaged parts;
- wheel imbalance. Balance wheels.
