After the first 2,000 km and every 15,000 km, check the condition of the alternator drive belt and, if necessary, adjust its tension.
Every 60,000 km of run, clean the contact rings of the generator with fine-grained sandpaper, check the wear and fit of the brushes to the rings and, if necessary, replace the brush holder with brushes. To perform these works, it is necessary to unscrew the fastening screw and remove the voltage regulator 12 (see fig. 97) with brush holder.
In order not to break the brushes when removing the regulator, you should first insert a screwdriver blade between the regulator housing and the brush holder and partially slide the regulator out of the generator, leaving the brush holder in place. After that, tilt the regulator and remove it together with the brush holder from the generator.
The brushes must move freely in the brush holder and not be chipped. If the brushes are worn out and protrude from the brush holder by less than 5 mm, the brush holder with brushes must be replaced. For replacement, the brush holder is pulled out of the voltage regulator housing by pressing on the output «IN». Before installing the voltage regulator with a new brush holder in place, it is necessary to blow out the socket in the generator from coal dust and wipe it from oil mixed with coal dust.
In order to avoid breakage of the brushes, before installing the regulator with the brush holder in place, it is necessary not to fully insert the brush holder into the regulator, but only partially push it in and insert it into the generator in this position. After installing the brush holder in place in the generator cover, lightly press the regulator to slide it into the generator.
