Vehicle controls

On all cars of the VAZ-2108, VAZ-2109 family, the same design of the instrument panel and the location of the vehicle controls (pic. 4).


1. Ignition switch. Its key can be set to the following four positions:

• 0 - everything is off, the key cannot be removed, the anti-theft device is not turned on;
• I - the ignition is on, the key cannot be removed;
• II - the starter is on, the key is not removed. This position is not fixed, and after releasing the key, it returns to the position «I». The starter can be turned on again only after the key is returned to the position «0»;
• III - the ignition is off, when the key is removed, the anti-theft device is activated. To turn off the anti-theft device, insert the key into the ignition switch and, slightly turning the steering wheel to the right and left, turn the key to position «0».

2. Key to turn on the ignition. The key is reversible, i.e. it can be inserted into the switch in any position. The number of the key is applied on the flag of the ring fastening the keys. By cutting off the flag or replacing the ring, the ignition key number can be kept secret.

3. Key for door locks.

4. Dashboard.

5. Central nozzles of the ventilation and heating system.

6. Side nozzles of the ventilation and interior heating system.

7. Glove box.

8. Magazine shelf.

9. Plug.

10. Rear window heating switch. The glass heating is switched on by pressing the button and switched off by pressing the button again.

11. Rear fog light switch. The rear fog light turns on by pressing the button and turns off when the button is pressed again.

12. Alarm switch. When the button is pressed, the flashing light of all direction indicators and the indicator lamp in the instrument cluster is turned on. Pressing the button again turns off the alarm.


13. Outdoor lighting switch. When you press the lower shoulder of the key to the first fixed position, the side lights are turned on, and to the second fixed position, the headlight circuits are additionally energized.

14. Control panel for the interior ventilation and heating system.

15. Gear lever. The gearshift pattern is printed on the lever handle.

16. Parking brake lever. By moving the lever up, the brake pads of the rear wheels are activated. To return the lever to its original position, press the button on the end of the lever handle. In case of emergency, the parking brake can be used while the vehicle is moving to slow down, or used simultaneously with the service brake system.

17. Ashtray.

18. Cigarette lighter. To use, press the cartridge, which remains in the recessed position for about 20 seconds, after which it automatically returns to its original position, ready for use.

19. Switch lever for wipers and washers. If the lever is in position:

• I - windshield wiper off, washer and rear window cleaner off;
• II - intermittent operation of the windshield wiper is on (not fixed position);
• III - intermittent operation of the windshield wiper is on (fixed position);
• IV - the first speed of the windshield wiper is on;
• V - the second speed of the windshield wiper is on;
• VI — (to myself), windshield washer on (not fixed position). At the same time, the windshield wiper also comes on. If at the same time the headlights are turned on, then the cleaners and headlight washers work;
• VII - rear window cleaner on (fixed position);
• VIII - rear window wiper and washer on (not fixed position).

20. Carburetor throttle control pedal.


21. Brake pedal.

22. Clutch pedal.

23. Carburetor choke control knob. Used to start a cold engine. When the handle is pulled out on itself, the air damper is closed and the indicator lamp for covering the air damper lights up in the instrument cluster.

24. Horn switch.

25. Knob for zeroing the daily odometer. The meter readings are reset by turning the knob counterclockwise with the vehicle stopped. On some cars, the handle is mounted directly on the speedometer.

26. Instrument lighting switch. It is energized when outdoor lighting is on. Turning the knob turns on the lighting of the devices and adjusts their brightness.

27. Hydrocorrector headlights with manual adjustment. Is established on a part of let-out cars. Turning the handle adjusts the angle of inclination of the headlight beam depending on the vehicle load.

28. Lever drive hood lock.

29. Switch lever for direction indicators, side parking lights and headlights. If, with the ignition on, the lever is in position:

• I - direction indicators are on; the dipped headlights are switched on if the switch key 13 is fully pressed;
• II - left turn indicators are on (not fixed position);
• III - left turn indicators are on (fixed position);
• IV - right turn indicators are on (not fixed position);
• V - right turn indicators are on (fixed position);
• VI — (to myself), high beam is on regardless of the position of the switch button 13 (not fixed position);
• VII — (Push), the headlights are on when the switch button 13 is fully pressed (fixed position).

If the ignition key is in position III («Parking»), and the lever is in position:

• III - left side parking lights are on;
• V - starboard parking lights are on.
