1. Make sure that the steering column adjustment lever is raised all the way up. Trying to move the steering wheel in a vertical plane, we check the reliability of the steering column fastening by the locking mechanism. If the steering column moves, adjust the locking mechanism (see "Steering column locking mechanism - adjustment").
2. Trying to move the steering wheel along the axis of the steering shaft, we make sure that there is no displacement of the steering wheel on the splines of the shaft and the shaft in the steering column.
3. To check the play in the steering, turn the steering wheel to the position corresponding to driving straight ahead. We put a slotted screwdriver on the instrument panel so that its blade is located under the steering wheel rim. Turning the steering wheel to the right (choosing backlash) before the wheels turn, and then to the left and, guided by the blade of a screwdriver, mark these positions on the rim with chalk. Backlash should not be more than 5° (or 18 mm on the outside of the rim).
Comment. Increased play indicates the need for troubleshooting. As a rule, first of all, the tie rod ends fail in the steering. The ball pin installed in them breaks the polyethylene bushings, which leads to an increase in the backlash in the steering. It is also possible to loosen the steering gear to the body.
4. We check the tightness of the steering gear mounting nuts and, if necessary, tighten them.
5. To check the tie rod ends, have an assistant move the steering wheel slightly from side to side. Putting your hand on the junction of the steering rod with the swing arm of the suspension strut (so that the palm touches them at the same time), by touch we determine the play in the tip.
Comment. When there is play in the tie rod end, the palm will feel the displacement of the rod relative to the pivot arm.
Similarly, we check the connection of the threaded insert with the rod and the tip.
Repeat the test on the other side of the car. We replace defective tips (see "Tie rod end - removal and installation"). If play is detected in the connection of the threaded insert, we tighten the coupling bolts of the tie rod and the tie rod end.
6. When rocking the steering wheel from side to side, we listen to the operation of the steering mechanism. Knocking from the right side of the steering mechanism indicates wear of the polyethylene sleeve.
Recommendation. Replace defective steering gear (see "Steering gear assembly with steering rods - removal and installation").
