Generator malfunctions (VAZ-2115, 1997-2012)

Possible malfunctions of the generator, their causes and remedies:

Cause of malfunction	Remedy
The control lamp does not light up when the ignition is switched on. Control devices do not work
Blown fuse F16 in the mounting block	Replace fuse
Open in the power supply circuit of the instrument cluster	Check wire «ABOUT» and its connections from the mounting block to the instrument cluster
Break in chains from the ignition switch to the mounting block	Check «TO» and «G» wires and their connections from the mounting block to the ignition switch
Ignition switch does not work	Check replace the faulty contact part of the ignition switch
The control lamp does not light up when the ignition is switched on and does not light up when the engine is running. Control devices are working. The battery is empty
Control lamp burnt out	Replace indicator lamp
Break in a chain of a food of a control lamp	Check «KB» wires and their connections from the generator to the instrument cluster and the reliability of contact between the terminals of the lamp holder and the instrument cluster board
Wear or sticking of brushes, oxidation of slip rings	Replace the brush holder with brushes, wipe the rings with a cloth soaked in gasoline
Damaged voltage regulator (break between output «DF» and «weight»)	Replace voltage regulator
Disconnected wire from outlet «D+» brush holder	Connect wire
Short circuit in positive valves	Replace rectifier
Soldering the field winding leads from slip rings	Solder the leads or replace the alternator rotor
The control lamp burns brightly or glows at full intensity when the engine is running. The battery is empty
Alternator drive belt slip	Adjust belt tension
Damaged voltage regulator	Replace voltage regulator
Damaged rectifier valves	Replace rectifier
Damaged excitation power supply diodes	Replace diodes or rectifier unit
Soldering the field winding leads from slip rings	Solder the leads or replace the alternator rotor
An open or short circuit in the stator winding, shorting it to «mass»	Replace generator stator
The control lamp glows when the engine is running. The battery is being recharged
Damaged voltage regulator (short circuit between output «DF» and «weight»)	Replace voltage regulator
Increased generator noise
Damaged alternator bearings	Replace rear bearing or front bearing cap
Interturn short circuit or short circuit to «mass» stator windings (howling generator)	Replace stator
Short circuit in one of the generator valves	Replace rectifier
