Warning. Checking the wheel alignment is mandatory when replacing or repairing suspension components that may result in a change in wheel alignment.
Carry out the control and adjustment of the wheel alignment angles on the vehicle under a static load of 3140 N (320 kgf) (four people and 40 kg in the trunk).
Wheel alignment angles must have the following values:
- camber -0°30'±20'
- longitudinal angle of inclination of the axis of rotation 3°30±30
- convergence -3±1 mm.
Before adjusting the installation angles of the track, check-
- air pressure in tires;
- axial clearance in the front wheel bearings,
- serviceability of shock absorbers (no stem jamming);
- radial and axial runout of tires;
- clearance in the ball joints of the suspension;
- steering wheel free play.
Eliminate any faults found and make the necessary adjustments.
After installing the car on the stand, immediately before checking the corners, it is necessary «to live» car suspension, applying 2-3 times a force of 392-490 N (40-50 kgf) (top down), first on the rear bumper, and then on the front.
The sequence of checking and adjusting the wheels should be as follows:
- 1. Pitch angle
- 2. Camber angle
- 3. Convergence
Angle of longitudinal inclination of the axis of rotation
If, when checking, the angle does not correspond to the data given above, it is necessary to change the number of shims 50 (rice. 4-1), installed between the axle of the upper arm and the cross member bracket (see table. 4-1).
Note. The data are given for washers with a thickness of 0.75 mm. Plus - adding a washer, minus - removing a washer.
To adjust the pitch angle of the steering axis:
- unscrew the nuts securing the axle of the upper arm of the front suspension and rearrange the washers from one bolt to another until a normal angle is obtained. The angle of the longitudinal inclination of the axis of rotation increases when the washers are moved from the rear bolt to the front and decreases when they are reversed;
- tighten the nuts with a torque wrench and check that the caster angle is correct.
Front camber angle
If the camber angle differs from the norm, then it is necessary to adjust it by changing the number of washers 50 (rice. 4-1), installed between the upper arm axle and the cross member bracket.
To reduce the camber angle, remove the same number of washers from both bolts, and to increase, add.
Toe-in of the front knees
If the toe-in value differs from the norm, then it is necessary to loosen the tie-down collars of the side rods and use the key 67.7813.9504 to turn both couplings by the same amount in opposite directions; in this way, the couplings are screwed on or unscrewed and change the length of the side rods.
After completing the adjustment, install the tie-down collars with a slot back, with a permissible deviation downwards by 60°to the horizontal plane of the car. When the nuts are tightened, the edges of the slots of the clamping collars must not touch.
After adjusting the toe-in, check whether the wheels and steering gear parts are touching the adjacent suspension and body parts. To do this, turn the wheels to failure in both directions until the bipod stops against the bolts of the steering gear housing.
