Cardan transmission — general information

Since the second half of 1988, on VAZ 2121 cars and their modifications, a cardan drive with hinges of increased durability has been installed. Its components are not interchangeable with the previously installed cardan transmission, but mutual replacement of cardan transmissions as an assembly is possible.

The new cardan gear is outwardly distinguished by its increased dimension and the presence of grease fittings in the cardan joints and splined forks. Cardan joints in the new cardan gear have improved sealing of needle bearings and better dirt protection, which is achieved by using seals - radial and mechanical seals. The diameter of the spikes of the cross and bearings is increased. Lubrication of the bearings of the cross is carried out through grease nipples with grease No. 158 or fiol-2U, and spline joints - with grease fiol-1 or fiol-2U.
