To assess the condition of the brake pads without removing the drum, there is a viewing window in the brake shield.
We remove the plug from the shield.
To replace the pads, we install the car on a viewing ditch or lift. Remove the rear wheel and loosen the parking brake cable (see Adjustment and removal of components of the parking brake system).
Before unscrewing the bolts securing the brake drum to the axle shaft flange, we tap their heads.
Bolts with a reduced head height are used to fasten the brake drum. Therefore, to unscrew them, it is better to use a hexagonal tool head, in which the working edges start immediately from its end (if necessary, the head can be protortsevat).
head «at 12» unscrew the two bolts securing the brake drum to the axle shaft.
To dismantle the drum, the removed bolts can be screwed into two threaded holes in the drum (in contrast to the mounting holes, the threaded holes are arranged symmetrically). When tightening, the bolts will abut against the axle shaft flange and move the drum.
We screw the bolts into the threaded holes.
You can also remove the drum..
... striking with a hammer through a wooden block on the end of the drum. We strike evenly, turning the drum.
We remove the drum.
We show two ways to remove the brake pads.
When removing the first way..
... with a screwdriver, disconnect the end of the upper coupling spring from the block..
... and remove the spring.
We remove the spacer bar.
Using pliers, we turn the shank of the front shoe rack until it coincides with the slot of the outer cup.
We remove the spring with the outer and inner cups.
On the other side of the brake shield, we take out the rack.
Elements of the support column of the block.
Removing the front pad..
... and remove the lower coupling spring.
Remove the rear strut support.
Removing the rear brake pad..
... and remove the lever of the manual drive of the pads from the tip of the rear parking brake cable.
When removing the brake pads in the second way, remove the support legs of both pads.
Pry off the rear brake pad with a screwdriver (or pull it by hand) and remove its lower stop from the base plate.
We lower the brake pads down with our hands, removing their upper stops from the slots of the pistons of the wheel cylinder.
Remove the bottom tension spring.
We display the pads assembled with a spacer bar and a spring from the axle shaft flange.
The operation is carried out carefully so as not to damage the anthers of the wheel cylinder.
We remove the lever of the manual drive of the pads from the tip of the rear parking brake cable..
... and remove the brake pads with the spacer bar and the upper return spring.
Holding one of the blocks on the floor with your foot, we stretch the spring..
... and remove the spacer bar from the stop.
Remove the top tension spring.
To remove the lever of the manual drive of the pads..
... we unpin its axis.
Let's take the puck..
…lever arm…
... and take out the axle.
We assemble and install the pads in the reverse order (depending on the disassembly). In the second method, before installing the second brake shoe, we fix the first one from movement by installing a support stand.
When installing new pads, it is necessary to press the pistons into the wheel cylinder. This operation can be performed as follows:
carefully striking the piston with a hammer through a wooden block..
... or having installed the pads, we press on them, relying on the shoulder of the brake shield with two mounting blades. In this case, the upper stops of the pads press the pistons into the cylinder.
After installing new brake pads, it is necessary to adjust the parking brake system (see Adjustment and removal of components of the parking brake system).
