In the starter housing, four poles with excitation windings are fixed with screws: three serial (successive) and one shunt (parallel). The housing together with the covers is pulled together with two bolts. Anchor - with end collector. The rear end of the armature shaft rotates in a ceramic-metal bushing pressed into the cover on the collector side, and the front end in a bushing pressed into the cover on the drive side.
Freewheel mounted on the drive shaft (overrunning clutch) with drive gear. It transmits torque in only one direction - from the starter to the engine, disengaging them after starting the engine. This is to protect the starter armature from damage due to overspeed.
The traction relay is used to engage the drive gear with the ring gear of the flywheel of the crankshaft of the engine and turn on the power to the starter motor. When the ignition key is turned to position «starter» voltage through an additional relay type 113.3747-10 is supplied to both windings of the traction relay (pulling and holding). After closing the contacts of the traction relay, the retracting winding is turned off.
The voltage of operation of the traction relay should be no more than 9 V at (20±5) °C. If not, there is a problem with the relay or actuator. The serviceability of the drive is determined during inspection after disassembling the starter. The faulty relay is replaced.
Starter 5722.3708 is installed on part of the motors - a four-pole four-brush DC electric motor with excitation from permanent magnets, with a planetary gearbox, a freewheel roller clutch and a two-winding traction relay.

Four permanent magnets are glued to the steel housing of the starter, each is additionally fixed from the inside with a flared aluminum sleeve. The body and covers of the starter are tightened with two studs. The armature shaft rotates in two ceramic-metal inserts installed in the cover and shaft support. Torque from the armature shaft is transmitted to the drive shaft through a planetary gearbox, consisting of a central gear, three planetary gears, a carrier and an internal gear (epicyclic).
Freewheel mounted on the drive shaft (overrunning clutch) with drive gear. It transmits torque in only one direction - from the starter to the engine, disengaging them after starting the engine. This is necessary to protect the gearbox and starter armature from damage due to excessive speed.
The device and operation of the traction relay and the power supply circuit are similar to the starter 35.3708.
