Removal and installation
Brake the car with a parking brake, disconnect the wire from the terminal «minus» battery and remove the spare wheel. Unscrew the bolt and nut securing the starter to the clutch housing and remove the starter.
Install the starter in the reverse order of removal. Before installation, lubricate with engine oil the front bushing of the armature shaft located in the clutch housing.
Disassembly
Unscrew the nut on the lower contact bolt of the traction relay 8 (pic. 150) and disconnect the output of the stator windings from it. Unscrew the screws securing the traction relay and remove it. Disconnect the armature 7 of the relay from the lever 6 of the drive. Remove the rubber plug from the front cover.
Pic. 150. Starter details: 1 - retaining ring; 2 - restrictive ring; 3 - drive with overrunning clutch; 4 - axis of the lever; 5 - front cover; 6 - drive lever; 7 - relay armature; 8 - traction relay; 9 - back cover; 10 - brush spring; 11 - lock washer; 12 - casing; 13 - coupling bolt; 14 - adjusting washers; 15 - brush; 16 - body; 17 - anchor.
The coupling bolts 13 are unscrewed, the casing 12 and the front cover 5 with the lever 6 are removed. The brush springs 10 are removed from the brush holder. Unscrew the nut of the axis 4 of the lever and remove the axis and lever 6 from the cover.
The lock washer 11 is removed from the armature shaft and the armature 17 is removed from the housing 16. The housing 16 is disconnected from the rear cover together with the positive brushes 15 soldered to the output of the stator series windings. Negative brushes (connected to «weight») remain in the brush holder.
Remove the retaining 1 and restrictive 2 rings and remove the drive 3 from the anchor. The drive is disassembled after removing the retaining ring from the coupling hub.
To disassemble the traction relay, unscrew the screws securing its cover, solder the winding output from the plug «50» and remove the relay cover.
After disassembly, the parts are blown with compressed air and wiped.
Assembly
The starter is assembled in the reverse order of disassembly. Before assembly, lubricate the screw splines of the armature shaft and the overrunning clutch hubs, the gear and the rear cover bushing with engine oil. The driving ring of the drive is lubricated with Litol-24 grease.
Selection of shims 14 (see fig. 150) provide axial free play of the armature no more than 0.5 mm. After assembly, the starter is checked on the stand.
